WARRENTON The championship flight of the Grand Champions Division is down to eight golfers, as action continued Wednesday in the Oregon Coast Invitational.

And the young guns have taken over the field.

Todays quarterfinals will still include a few familiar names (defending champion Chris Shepard, two-time champion Jay Ross), and one rookie golfer from across the river, Jack Whealdon.

The former state champion from Ilwaco High School, who recently completed his junior year at Saint Martins University in Lacey, Wash., has advanced to the final eight in his first year of the Oregon Coast Invitational following a Wednesday win over Jeb Savage.

Whealdon will face former Oregon State golfer Anthony Arvidson in one of four championship flight matches today, while Ross will take on Matt Elmes. Shepard will face Mike Fritz, and Christiaan Thorne is scheduled to play Rex Puterbaugh.

Also on tap today are the Womens championship flight quarterfinals, with tee times at 1:20 and 1:28 p.m.
