Astoria to test hydrants Thursday

On Thursday between 7 a.m. and 3 p.m., the city of Astoria Public Works Operations will conduct flushing and selective flow-testing of fire hydrants in the following locations:

• Harrison Avenue between 36th and 38th streets.

• Harrison Drive.

• Grand Avenue between 35th and 39th streets.

• Irving Avenue between 37th and 38th streets.

• Franklin Avenue between 39th and 40th streets.

• Commercial Street between 44th and 45th streets.

• Commercial Alley.

• Lief Erikson Drive from 42nd to 50th streets.

• Cedar Street between 46th and 50th streets.

Customers may experience temporary low pressure and water discoloration during the flushing and flow-testing process. If conditions continue after 3 p.m., residents are asked to report concerns to 503-325-3524.

Seaside hires public works director

The city of Seaside has hired Paul Stull as its new public works director.

Stull, who has more than 30 years of civil and environmental engineering experience, will oversee the city’s public works operations, including streets, water, wastewater, and capital projects.

Stull is a native of the North Coast and a graduate of Astoria High School. He attended the United States Air Force Academy and Oregon State University, graduating with a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering and a master’s degree in environmental engineering.

He has worked throughout the United States as a licensed professional engineer on infrastructure, energy conservation and environmental remediation projects, as well as range projects for military, law enforcement, and private clubs.

“We are thrilled to welcome Paul to our team,” City Manager Spencer Kyle said in a news release. “Paul’s extensive expertise, coupled with more than three decades of infrastructure work, will be invaluable as we continue to enhance our city’s infrastructure and public services.”

Stull assumes the Seaside role on Feb. 24. When fully staffed, the Seaside Public Works Department has 23 full-time employees.

Credit union seeks outstanding educators

For 16 years, OnPoint Community Credit Union has honored Oregon and Washington educators with its Prize for Excellence in Education. This May, OnPoint will award $193,000 to the winning educators and schools nominated by their students and community.

Four winning educators will have their mortgage or rent paid by OnPoint for one year. Four runners-up will each receive a $5,000 cash prize. The OnPoint Prize also includes the Community Builder Award for innovative school projects. Four schools will receive $2,000, and a fifth school selected by community votes will receive $5,000.

Anyone can nominate an outstanding educator or apply for a Community Builder award at onpointprize.com. Educators may also nominate themselves.

Applicants must be full-time or job-share classroom teachers, counselors, school administrators or librarians for grades pre-K through12. They must work in an accredited public, private or charter school, located within any county that OnPoint serves, including Clatsop. OnPoint also accepts applications for the Community Builder awards within those counties. The nomination period closes at 11:59 p.m. on April 8. Educator of the Year finalists and Community Builder winners will be announced May 7.
