Astoria movies enter the 21st Century this week, as Coming Attraction Theaters Inc. installs Christie Solara digital projectors in Gateway Cinemas on Marine Drive.
“This is the largest event – the entire conversion from 35mm to digital – in the history of the industry,” said Tim Wood, vice president of Coming Attractions. He expects contractors to finish the conversion in Astoria by Friday, with some cancellations of matinee shows.
The new theater will become a hardwired network, in which a master computer orchestrates shows in all the auditoriums, each equipped with its own server for movies.
