Astoria guard Brooklyn Avalon (5) passes Saturday against Scappoose. The Fishermen shook off a slow start to post a 48-16 win.

The Knappa girls basketball team claimed a league title but the boys were upset in their regular-season finales.

Meanwhile, the Warrenton boys prepare for the Coastal Range League playoffs and Astoria’s hoopsters had a busy weekend as they get set for games this week against Seaside.

Knappa girls claim title

The Lady Loggers completed step one in their quest to return to the state tournament in Pendleton with a 52-49 win over Nestucca on Friday.

With the win, the Loggers won the Northwest League regular season title with a 13-1 league record (19-6 overall).

Next up for the Loggers is a league championship game this Saturday at Vernonia High School. Knappa’s opponent is not yet determined, and the time has not been announced.

Knappa boys upended

Though the Knappa boys had second place in league wrapped up, that didn’t stop third-place Nestucca from pulling off an upset on Friday.

The Loggers’ 54-45 defeat to the Bobcats was their third league loss, as the team finished with an 11-3 league mark (19-6 overall). The Loggers have a chance to exact some quick revenge against the Bobcats: Knappa hosts Nestucca at 6 p.m. Wednesday in a league playoff game.

Astoria boys split weekend

Astoria basketball won the season series against Tillamook with a 68-56 win Friday behind 24 points from Quin Gohr.

Gohr and fellow junior Kanon Huber combined to score 43 of the Fishermen’s 68 points. With the win, Astoria (2-7 in Cowapa League play, 4-16 overall) snapped a seven-game losing streak.

The Fishermen were back in action Saturday to take on Scappoose High School, but tumbled to a 72-52 loss. Gohr once again led the way with 16 points. He was joined in double figures by Huber’s 11 and sophomore Cooper Jones with 12.

Astoria (2-7 in Cowapa League play, 4-16 overall) is set to travel to Seaside this Tuesday for the last meeting between the Cowapa rivals. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.

Astoria girls shrug off slow start

The Lady Fisherman overcame a slow start to win comfortably Saturday against Scappoose.

A 12-7 game after the opening eight minutes eventually became a 48-16 victory for Astoria. The victory moved the Fishermen into a second-place tie with St. Helens in the Cowapa League; both teams are 4-2 in league play. Astoria is 11-8 overall.

Malory Dundas and Kyah Gohr scored double figures for the Fishermen, with 17 and 14 respectively.

Astoria travels to Seaside for a key game Tuesday against the Seagulls. The Fishermen trail the Seagulls by just one game in the league standings. The game begins at 5:30 p.m.

Warrenton boys prepare for playoffs

The Warrenton boys and girls teams wrapped up their regular seasons with Monday games at league-leading Banks.

Next up for the boys: a league playoff game Tuesday at home against Riverdale. The previous two games between Warrenton and Riverdale were decided by three points or less. Tipoff Tuesday is 6 p.m., with the winner advancing to play second-place Neah-Kah-Nie in the next playoff game.

The Warrior girls season ended after Monday’s game at Banks. Results of Monday’s two Warrior games against Banks were not available by The Astorian’s press deadline.
