JOHN DAY Seaside opened the annual Grant Union Tournament with a 17-4 win over La Pine Thursday afternoon.

In the process, the Gulls improve to 3-0 overall. Seaside faces Culver today and closes out the tournament Saturday vs. Jefferson.

Seasides Brook Johnson went 3-for-4 at the plate, with three runs scored and two RBIs in Thursdays win, and teammate Ian Hawksford was 2-for-4 with a double, triple and three runs scored.

Ben DeGandi and Jason Pfund also had two hits apiece, and both scored three runs.

Jon Perry started and picked up the win on the mound, striking out four in three innings before giving way to Eddie Soller, who struck out three in two innings.
