Man Caught On Camera Tainting Reservoir

Police in Portland say a 21-year-old man was caught urinating in the city’s Mount Tabor reservoir. The Water Bureau decided to drain the reservoir and dispose of the water.
According to Portland police, Joshua Seater was seen by Water Bureau Security approaching the reservoir’s fence and answer nature’s call. The incident may have been captured on a security camera. Footage is under review, and prosecutors will decide whether to file charges.
But in the meantime, Water Bureau director David Schaff says he decided to dump the reservoir’s water. He says given the relative size of the release, it’s affordable, and worth it.
“I have ten billion gallons of water sitting up behind dams One and Two in the Bull Run Watershed. I have several hundred million gallons of water sitting in reservoirs right now, that nobody’s peed in. I can afford to open the drain and let 7.8 million gallons that we know somebody peed into and let the water go down into the sewer.”
He estimates the cost of the release and cleanup somewhere north of $36,000. He says he hopes the county will prosecute.
