Ear: El Primero

Ever wonder what happened to the historic yacht El Primero? It stayed at Pier 39 in Astoria for a while but, when last seen locally, was tied to a dock near Uniontown.

Built in 1893, the 120-foot yacht is a true classic, with a teakwood and mahogany paneled interior that can accommodate 22 guests and a full crew. It has had at least four presidents aboard, Taft, Harding, Hoover and F.D. Roosevelt.

A CBS8 story in September revealed that Capt. Jeff Anderson, a home builder, bought it about three years ago from the late Capt. Christian Lint for $250,000, despite its rough shape. It’s now in San Diego, California.

Anderson said ”some people are telling me a million” is what it might cost to refurbish the yacht, which he plans to do in El Salvador. But then there’s the problem of getting it there. If you’re interested, the Primero Revival Mission fundraiser also provides an opportunity to get updates or even send prayers.

And, once it’s restored? “I don’t know — I could charter it, I could live on it, I could sell it,” he said. “Like I said, I am going to finish it, that’s it.” (Screenshot: El Primero)
