Q&A with Lori, Julie and Pam Lum, Lums Auto Center

Tell us how you started in the car business.
Lori: My father (David Lum) started with the Toyota franchise [in Astoria] in 1969. And now, we operate Toyota, Scion, Chrysler, Jeep and Dodge, as well as the largest certified pre-owned inventory on the north coast. I was very fortunate to join my father almost 18 years ago, after working for two years for Toyota Motor Credit in Portland. Now, I’m proud to be working with my sisters to build upon the foundation that my father has established. It’s been remarkable to see how we’ve transformed over the years to the new state-of-the-art facility in Warrenton. We’re very proud of our new facility; however, we couldn’t have done it without our great customers and awesome employees. Many of the employees have worked together for over 20 years and we consider each other like family.
What is your No. 1 priority?
Lori: Our customers are our No. 1 priority! We are focused on providing excellent customer service with hopes that they will return to us again and possibly refer additional friends. We have implemented the Toyota Signature program, which ensures that proper processes and procedures are in place to provide excellent customer service. For many years, we have been recognized by Toyota for achieving the Toyota Signature Award, the highest customer service standards in the automobile industry.
Julie: Also, along with providing excellent customer service, we are focused on ongoing training for our employees. For example, our service technicians are factory-trained and are required to complete ongoing manufacturer’s training. Additionally, we work closely with Clatsop Community College’s automobile technician program. It is important to us to create jobs in the community where students can pursue a tremendous career in the auto industry.
The “Who Says Girls Can’t Sell Cars?” is quite a tag line. Tell us about “Where Are the Lum’s Girls?”
Pam: It is very important for us to stay current and relevant. We’re currently running a campaign called “Where Are the Lum’s Girls?” As you know, we believe in partnering with our community by giving back. Over the next few months, we want to bring the attention not on us, but to our neighbors and their families and our fellow businesses and nonprofits that make our community a better place. Every week or so, we will be featuring a business or nonprofit by offering a free product or service at their place of business. For example, prior to Prince William and Kate’s wedding, we highlighted Astoria Coffee House by providing free scones. During Mother’s Day, we highlighted Bruce’s Candy Kitchen’s new location in Seaside and gave away free candy. Be watching our Facebook page for the next “Where Are the Lum’s Girls?” location.
It appears you three sisters get along well. What’s the secret?
Pam: I recently joined my sisters in the family business and I feel so fortunate they made room for me. I really enjoy creating and collaborating with them during the day and hanging out with them and their families during the evenings. We really enjoy each other; that’s a true testament to our parents for raising us to get along and respect each other. We work hard together, play together and laugh together.
Julie: We couldn’t focus on the business like we do without the help of our mother. She is the first one we call when our children are sick and we need help. Also, we are lucky enough to enjoy her cooking at least three times a week. After work, we’ll swing by her house for a home cooked meal.
It seems like you’re very focused on the car business. What do you do for fun?
Lori: Where do I start? Baseball, golf, Lego building, swimming, climbing Rapunzel’s Tower (aka the Astoria Column), bonfires and clam-digging. These are all fun activities enjoyed with my husband, John, and children, David, Luke, Haley and Kai.
Julie: I live on a small farm with my husband, Pete, and my children, Sha Sha and Judd. We have one thoroughbred horse, nine chickens, three cats, one wiener dog and numerous animals that roam the property. We love the outdoors, fishing, camping and gardening. As a child, my favorite books and TV series were “Little House on the Prairie,” so no wonder I love living on a farm.
Pam: I am seeking another hole-in-one. Many years ago, I was lucky enough to have a hole-in-one at Heron Lakes Golf Course. Every time I get up to a par 3, I think I may get another hole-in-one, but no such luck yet. Hopefully, my persistence will pay off soon.
