CANNON BEACH – Michael Burgess, co-founder of the Tolovana Arts Colony, was found dead in his home Sunday.

Burgess was found by three friends who went to check because they were worried about him.

He was an author, writing teacher at Tillamook Bay Community College and former writer for the Upper Left Edge newspaper.

Hank Johnson, owner of the Wave Crest Inn in Cannon Beach, said Burgess’ sense of humor was very keen and he will always remember the author as a passionate teacher of writing.

“He kept pushing people to write,” Johnson said. “That was always a constant with him.”

Funeral arrangements will be announced later.
