Obituaries: Harvey D. Marsh

Harvey D. Marsh, 91, of Seaside, died Tuesday, March 31, 2009, in Warrenton.

He was born Feb. 6, 1918, in Tekoa, Wash., to Gerald and Bertha “Peggy” (Griffin) Marsh. He lived in Portland until he was 14 years old, when he and his mother moved to Seaside.

After high school, he entered the military and served in both the U.S. Army and Navy. His Navy career took him to the South Pacific during the engagement with the Japanese in World War II and “Cross Roads Operation” 1 and 2. His Army career placed him with the Second Division as an infantryman at the start of the Korean War, where he was awarded the Bronze Star Medal for Valor. He retired from the military in 1966.

In 1943, he married Emily Cox in Astoria. They divorced in 1968.

In 1997, he married Ruth Dooley Eatch in Gearhart. She survives, residing in Seaside.

Between wars, Mr. Marsh worked for Pillsbury Flour Mill and Uptegrove Lumber in Astoria and as a junior field engineer for Pacific Power in Seaside. After his military retirement, he worked as a civilian counter-intelligence agent in Portland, then as an investigator for the Oregon State Justice Department and finally as superintendent of the security division, Puget Sound Naval Shipyard (police and fire branches).

He was a member of the Portland Al Kader Shrine, Scottish Rite, Beaverton Masons, Washington Law Enforcement Officers Association, Seaside Elks, American Legion (62 year member), Veterans of Foreign Wars and Astoria Retired Officers and National Retired Federal Employees.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, Jon and Jeffery Marsh; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and three stepchildren, Jim Reed, Marie Oliver and Lindy Setchfield.

A celebration of life will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at the American Legion Post 99 at 1315 Broadway in Seaside.
