Ear: Rumors

The creation of a “The Goonies” sequel is an idea that never says die, and as a result, there have been several false alarms. Here are a few of them:

ComicBook reported that during the 20th anniversary of the movie in 2005 in Astoria, it was revealed that Steven Spielberg had an idea for a story for ”Goonies 2. Unfortunately, Warner Bros., which owns the film rights, wasn’t interested.

In 2007, there were mutterings about making “Goonies 2” an animated series. That idea didn’t gel, either. In 2014, “The Goonies” director, Richard Donner, told TMZ he was “serious” about doing a sequel. Then nothing happened. Again.

In 2019, “The Goonies” stars Sean Astin (Mikey) and Corey Feldman (Mouth) went to Donner with a 10-page sequel pitch. Donner said, “Too expensive.”

During a 2020 “Reunited Apart” episode, Spielberg mentioned that “every couple of years we come up with an idea, but then it doesn’t hold water.”

CinemaBlend said Christopher Columbus, the original Goonies scriptwriter, was invited by Donner to go out on his boat and brainstorm a “Goonies 2” idea, but it never happened. Adam Goldberg pitched a script to Donner, but it became moot when Donner died in 2021. After the director’s death, most thought a sequel could never be made.

And, in September 2024, a quickly debunked sequel rumor abounded online. Astin, inspired, posted a fake movie poster (shown) on X, saying, “It’s our time. C’mon Steven …” At last, maybe Warner Bros. thinks so, too.
