Car makes unusual entrance at Rite Aid

No one was injured Wednesday morning when a vehicle crashed into the Rite Aid Pharmacy at 145 S. U.S. Highway 101 in Youngs Bay Plaza in Warrenton, narrowly missing a passerby. The call came in at 10:50 a.m. and Warrenton Police Officer Al Fontana and members of the Warrenton Fire Department responded.

The driver of the Suzuki SX4 was Shirley Hayes, 73, a resident of Glenwood Village in Warrenton. Hayes apparently accidentally stepped on the gas pedal instead of the brake.

A passerby, Michael Davis, 39, of Astoria, was struck by the car’s side mirror but declined medical treatment. He had been walking along the covered walkway in front of the store when he heard the revving engine and stopped just in time to avoid being in the path of the Suzuki.

Hayes’ vehicle demolished the sliding doors at the Rite Aid entrance on the side of the store closest to Neptune Avenue. The front tire of the Suzuki actually went inside the entrance. The vehicle also sheared off the metal post that holds up the handicapped parking sign and badly damaged the post that holds up the roof over the outside walkway. Hayes did not receive a citation, but she will be required to take a driving test.

The Suzuki sustained an estimated $5,000 damage. There was no estimate on damage to the building, but it is expected to be several thousand dollars.
