Candidate for Gearhart City Council, Position 1.
I am a local, independent contractor and have lived in Gearhart for 33 years. My wife, Susan Edy, and I are proud to have raised two successful children here. We also credit this fine community in helping them grow into responsible, mature adults. We are fortunate to have four grandchildren.
My background is in construction. After working on the Alaska pipeline, I became a contractor. I started my own business here 26 years ago and primarily have done home remodels in Gearhart and Seaside.
I am a graduate of Pasadena High School in California and also attended the University of Alaska in Fairbanks.
Gearhart city councilor, Position 1, 2014-2018. Certified emergency response team — National CERT program under Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). Ham radio operator.
I began attending Gearhart City Council meetings approximately five years ago, after reading in The Seaside Signal that the first Wednesday of each month was guaranteed to be entertaining. I soon realized there was a great deal of strife and not a lot of cohesion. I continued to attend the meetings and felt the council was in need of a representative who could work with others, listen and compromise.
When I chose to run I did not have a particular agenda, nor did I choose my opponent. At the suggestion of our city administrator, he placed me in the Position 1 spot. I believe the main reason I chose to become involved was I felt I could be a positive representative for the people of Gearhart.
The last four years have given me a great deal of experience to make me a solid choice to represent Gearhart again. I have taken my appointment as a Gearhart city councilor very seriously.
I believe in abiding by the Gearhart comprehensive plan. Our city ordinances have been created to protect our town and it is important that they be understood and followed. I spend a great deal of time reading and preparing for our council meetings. It is imperative that I am familiar with current issues and the laws that affect these issues. Whenever there has been a doubt in my mind, I have turned to county and state officials to make sure I understand the laws which relate to these issues.
I will continue to make an honest effort to be thoughtful in my approach when considering new regulations or projects proposed for our city. I fully understand the importance of compromise. I am quite aware that I represent the people of Gearhart, not myself. As we step into the future there are many considerations which will affect Gearhart, our present livability, and the beautiful environment in which we live. As we go forward, we will be making decisions about the placement of a new fire station, the creation of a parks master plan, and an emphasis on community, safety, and resiliency.
I will endeavor to preserve the residential and small-town feel of Gearhart. And, I will strive to assist the community and our governing officials in a responsible and well-thought-out way. I have the time to devote to the work that is required of being a city councilor and I will continue to do my best to represent ALL of Gearhart for the next four years.
Thank you for your support.
