Letter: Union under biggest threat since Civil War

Our nation is now over 250 years old, and as we begin a new year and the rump end of the current decade, the Union is being challenged by its greatest domestic threat since the end of the American Civil War.

Our federal executive branch, whether you voted for them or not, shows little respect for civil liberties, constitutional rights, and has demonstrated that they will attempt to overreach at any opportunity they can find to serve private interests over public welfare.

Do not let them! I served in uniform for over 20 years, fought in two of America’s wars, and defended our Constitution to keep danger away from the U.S.A. Increasingly, I find the words of my oath visible in the cold, winter air: “…I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic …”

Fighting for our civil liberties, our freedom, and our country does not mean choosing violence, but it does demand discomfort. It does demand sacrifice. It does demand courage. No single group alone can bear this burden for the many; all are called to find a way to serve. E pluribus unum: “From Many, One.”

Be ready when the call comes to take to the streets. When your civil rights become threatened, answer as Americans have since 1775: “Don’t Tread on Me!”
