Miss Clatsop County title winners announced

SEASIDE — About 300 people watched as over $6,500 in scholarships were awarded, and five local young women took home titles on Jan. 10, advancing them to the Miss Oregon State competition in June. 

Madalyn Aiken, 17, of Astoria, was crowned Miss Clatsop County 2026, as well as receiving the Chef John Newman Memorial Public Speaking Award. The Miss North Coast 2026 title went to Gia Davis, 17, who also won the Miss Interview award. Both Aiken and Davis earned $1,100 in scholarships. 

Lizzi Rocha, 20, of Warrenton, Miss Clatsop County Runner-Up, earned $500. Josie Morinville, 23, was awarded the final two special awards in the Miss Division: Evening Wear and Talent. Along with her non-finalist award, she earned $300. 

Shaelyn Bangs, 16, won the Miss Clatsop County’s Teen 2026 title. She will receive a total of $1,000 in scholarships after winning both the Teen Talent and Interview awards. Bangs was also announced as the Four Points of the Crown — Service winner, based on her community service efforts, as well as the Congeniality award. In total, she earned $1,000 in scholarships. 

Reagan Hartnett, 17, of Seaside, was announced as Miss North Coast’s Teen, and won the Four Points of the Crown – Scholarship, bringing in the most money through the silent auction, and receiving $700 for her college fund. 

Daisy McCalmon, 15, of Clatskanie, was awarded the Miss Columbia-Pacific’s Teen title, and was the recipient of the Four Points of the Crown – Success for her attendance, timeliness of paperwork and commitment leading up to the pageant. McCalmon also won the People’s Choice Award at the Miss Clatsop Social Impact Showcase the night before the pageant. She also received $700. 

Raeden Brown, 16, of Seaside, took home the Four Points of the Crown – Style, and won the Teen Chef John Newman’s Memorial Public Speaking Community Service award, earning her $550.

All non-finalists were given a $100 scholarship. 

The Miss Clatsop County Scholarship Program is open to residents of Clatsop, Tillamook and Columbia counties.  Miss Clatsop County, Miss Oregon and Miss America Organizations, are all non-profit corporations established solely to provide contestants with the opportunity to enhance their professional and education goals with the assistance of monetary grants and awards.

Free movie showing offered at Astoria Armory

The Astoria Police Department and the Astoria Parks Department are offering a free community movie showing of “Kindergarten Cop” at 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 18, at the Astoria Armory. 

The 1990 movie, filmed in Astoria, and starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, starts at 2:15 p.m. Astoria Police Department officers will serve up free fresh popcorn, cold Sno Cones and beverages.

 

Oregon virtual school offers informational sessions

The Oregon Charter Academy (ORCA) serves K-12 students across every Oregon county. Enrollment is open year-round, so students can transition to ORCA at nearly any point in their schooling. 

For the second half of this school year, ORCA is opening registration for a series of statewide virtual information sessions. Designed to inform parents and students, these sessions give an overview of the curriculum, and explain how a tuition-free, accredited online public charter school can support personalized learning.

The upcoming virtual events are as follows: Wednesday, Jan. 21, at 6:30 p.m.; Thursday, Jan. 29, at noon; Monday, Feb. 2, at noon; and Tuesday, Feb. 10, at 6:30 p.m. To RSVP for any of them, go to oregoncharter.org/info-sessions.

Casebeer receives DAISY Award

Columbia Memorial Hospital has announced that Nick Casebeer is the most recent recipient of the Diseases Attacking the Immune System (DAISY) Award for Extraordinary Nurses. He is a nurse in the Family Birth Center, and was recognized for his professionalism and compassion.

Casebeer was nominated for the award by a family member of a patient. Part of the nomination read: “Nurses like Nick exemplify what it means to provide outstanding patient care, and we will always remember the compassion and professionalism he showed our family.”

Casebeer will be featured on the DAISY Foundation website, and will have the opportunity to apply for scholarships as part of his recognition.

The DAISY Foundation, established in 1999 in memory of J. Patrick Barnes, recognizes extraordinary nurses who exemplify exceptional care to patients and their families.
