Letter: ‘What we do now will shape our future’

This week, like many fellow Americans, I’ve been reflecting on the state of our democracy. For as long as I can remember, being an American has meant belonging to something larger than myself — a nation bound not by bloodline, but by shared values, shared responsibility and a commitment to liberty. By birth, we inherit rights and protections, but also the duty to uphold them together.
“For the people, by the people” is not a slogan; it is the core of our identity. Our government exists because citizens grant it power. The Constitution — our enduring contract — was written to ensure liberty and justice for all and to hold leaders accountable when they violate their oath.
Throughout our history, we’ve built a system of laws meant to treat no one as lesser or greater. Freedom has never been free; it has been defended by those who swore to protect the Constitution. Their sacrifice demands that we reject wrongdoing, no matter who commits it.
So why are we watching events in Washington as though we are powerless? One person is not the nation. We, the people, share that power. Congress, judges, federal agencies — you have the constitutional tools to act. How far will things go before those entrusted with authority fulfill their responsibilities?
The world is watching. What we do now will shape our future. This is our country. Stand up. Unite. Do the job you swore to do on our behalf.
Yes, he was elected. But in any job, when someone refuses to fulfill their duties, they are removed.
