Police have arrested a man in connection with an explosive device discovered at a public restroom on Oregon’s North Coast last September.
Oregon State Police arrested James Mason Liggett, 52, of St. Helens in Grants Pass on Sunday.
Liggett was wanted on charges of attempted murder, attempted assault in the first and second degree, first degree arson, possession of a destructive device and manufacture of a destructive device.
According to previous reporting by The Astorian, on Sept. 16, Kayla Winkelhake and her two-year-old son discovered the bomb.
“He noticed that something was up at the door,” Winkelhake said. “So I just picked him up and noticed there was a backpack in there, and I’m, like, “That doesn’t really look normal. So, we used the other bathroom.”
According to Winkelhake, inside the restroom was a backpack tied to the door with shoelaces; opening the door would have pulled the laces and ostensibly triggered what was inside. Upon leaving the rest area, Winkelhake saw and notified a park ranger about the backpack, then enjoyed a day at the beach.
According to officials, Oregon State park staff called in Oregon State Police after the backpack was found by the ranger. The device was defused by a bomb squad including experts from OSP and the Salem Police Department.
There were no injuries associated with the incident.
On Oct. 12, a pipe bomb was found and removed in Chinook, Washington.
Per a statement to The Astorian, Oregon State Police have not found any connection between Liggett and the bomb in Chinook at this time.
Following Liggett’s arrest, a spokesperson for Oregon State Police told KMUN investigators do not anticipate any other arrests associated with the Warrenton backpack bomb incident.
