Letter: High school seniors deserve flexible policy

For years, high school seniors have had the privilege of early release, and for good reason. By the time we reach our final year of school, most of us have already completed the majority of our core classes.

Personally, I only have two core classes this year, with the rest being electives. It feels unnecessary to spend a full seven-hour day in a school when so much of our time is filled with classes that aren’t essential for graduation.

Giving seniors the option of early release would not only make schedules more efficient, but it could also improve overall attendance. Many students would be more motivated to show up and stay engaged if they knew they didn’t have to spend all day in school without a clear purpose.

Seniors should be allowed the flexibility to attend only the classes they’re required to take, if they choose. Allowing seniors to choose which classes they wish to attend would help prepare them for the next stage of their lives, rather than being stuck in a school building all day.
