Letter: Speak up about college board

Clatsop Community College continues to struggle with transparency, accountability and ethical governance. After watching the most recent Board of Education meeting, it’s clear serious reform is long overdue.

One of the few voices of reason — Tim Lyman — stood up to demand the college do better. He consistently advocates for ethical standards, policy reform and financial responsibility, ensuring the burden doesn’t fall unfairly on students. His efforts should be applauded. But he cannot do it alone.

At that meeting, we saw another example of failed leadership. Six months ago, the board voted to take training courses due by the end of February. Yet only two members completed the training. Their excuse? A single day of inclement weather.

That’s not just irresponsible — it’s insulting. Students are expected to meet deadlines and adapt to adversity without such leeway. What kind of example is this?

Even more concerning is board member Jody Stahanzyk’s increasingly unprofessional, disruptive conduct. Her habit of talking over others, using financial influence to sway decisions and creating chaos, has become a liability.

Her behavior was not just rude — it was embarrassing. Even the Associated Student Government representative spoke out about the board’s impact on students.

This board is entrusted with the future of Clatsop Community College. When members behave unethically, dodge responsibility and act with arrogance, it’s time for the community to act.

We demand transparency and accountability. If board members cannot deliver, recall must be considered. Students, faculty and taxpayers deserve better. Enough is enough.
