Junior Xanh Quang shot a career low 5 under par 67 Thursday to lead Seaside to the lowest score in 4A this season.
Quang had seven birdies and just two bogeys during his round against Scappoose. The Seagulls shot a season best 309 to defeat their league rival 309-344. With the victory, Seaside put themselves on the verge of a Cowapa League title.
Alex Arden was the No. 2 golfer with a 78. Arden birded two of the final four holes to break the 80 mark.
Madden Wunderlich was on pace to shoot a 77 before he triple bogeyed the difficult 18th hole. Logan Norman was the final scorer with an 84. Fifth-place golfer Landon Nofield shot a career low 90 for the Seagulls.
Seaside head coach Jim Poetsch has been adamant all season that lower scores were on the horizon for his talented group, so Quang breaking 70 will give the rest of his teammates the confidence to shoot even lower as the season comes to a close.
“I knew it was only a matter of time before we shot a really low score,” Poetsch said. “Having Xanh shoot a round like today really helps with our scoring. I think the guys are starting to have a little confidence that we can go really low as a team. Especially since the other guys all feel that they can shoot lower than what they did today.
“We were on pace for a sub-three hundred round when we made the turn and were right there most of the back. The eighteenth, like it usually does, cost us six strokes alone. Landon also showed that he is ready to take that next step as a player. He had a putt for 88 on the last hole when he had never broken 90 in competition before. That fifth player can be very important as we head towards the postseason.”
The Seagulls will have an opportunity to clinch the outright Cowapa League title May 7 at Gearhart Golf Links.
