A 20-2 victory over Banks High School on Saturday afternoon sets up Warrenton baseball to repeat as 3A Northwest League Champions.
After a tight league race with Valley Catholic and Banks a year ago, the Warriors look to be the clear favorites this season.
Warrenton completed the first half of its league season with an 8-0 record and sits at No. 1 in the 3A Oregon School Activities Association rankings.
Warrenton scored seven runs in the third and 10 runs in the fifth against Banks’ backup pitchers. Catcher Tyson McGrorty led the way with three hits and four runs batted in. Ryder Sturgell, Talon McGrorty, Odin Wilson and Zephan Pierce all had two hits and at least one RBI.
Talon McGrorty started for Warrenton and went three perfect innings. He struck out seven of the nine Braves he faced. Wilson and Blake Tingstrom combined to get the final six outs of the game.
Next up for the Warriors: three league games against Westside Christian, Corbett and Catlin Gabel. The Warriors were scheduled to play Westside Christian on Monday, Corbett on Wednesday and host Catlin Gabel on Friday.
The Warriors also have a nonleague game against Taft High School on Saturday. Despite being ranked No. 11, Taft played No. 2 ranked and undefeated Blanchet Catholic to a couple one-run games last week.
Knappa at 6-0 in league play
So far through six league games, the Knappa Loggers have created separation on every team but one.
After two shutouts against Vernonia/ Jewell, the Loggers are now 6-0 in league and 10-2 overall. The only team who has been able to keep up with Knappa to this point is Clatskanie. The Tigers also find themselves 6-0 in league and play Knappa the week of May 6.
The Loggers shut out Vernonia/ Jewell in both Friday games by scores of 10-0 and 13-0.
In game one, Knappa’s Oliver Stevens pitched five innings, gave up two hits and struck out 13 batters. Gavin Barendse led the team with three hits, while Braxton Hill had a team high three RBIs.
Game two saw the Loggers score five runs in the second and six in the fourth en route to a 13-0 victory.

Astoria fell to North Bend on Thursday afternoon 11-4. The Fishermen took a 3-0 lead, but the No. 5 ranked team in 4A rattled off the next seven runs. Despite the quick start, Astoria finished the game with three hits and made six errors.
Saturday the Fishermen topped Yamhill-Carlton 7-2 at Tapiola Park behind a six-run second inning. Archer Hawkins and Jacob Klepp combined on the mound to hold their 3A opponent at bay.
