Astoria tops North Bend in softball

Around the diamonds last week, Astoria softball looked to bounce back after two league losses; Seaside claimed its first Cowapa League victory; Warrenton became well-positioned in the Coastal Range League, and Knappa kept pace with Clatskanie.

Astoria vs. North Bend
After a pair of tough losses to Scappoose and St. Helens, the Fishermen were looking to get back on track against North Bend High School on Friday.
Astoria traveled to Stayton High School for a nonleague neutral field game against North Bend. The Fishermen made quick work of the Bulldogs with an 18-3 victory.
Astoria’s Hailey Svensen and Aryana Adams combined for seven hits and seven runs batted in. Pitchers Maddie Wilkin and Taryen Wray also combined for seven RBIs in Astoria’s victory.
In total, the Fishermen had 14 hits and made just one error in the five-inning victory.
Next up for the Fishermen: back-to-back games against Tillamook on May 1 and May 6. Currently, Astoria is No. 6 in the 4A Oregon School Activities Association rankings.

Seaside gets first Cowapa League win
Seaside softball got on the board after a 15-8 victory over Tillamook on April 22. It was the Seagulls first victory of the year in the Cowapa League.
The Seagulls had a total of 16 hits, including three each from Lydia Klumper, Carly Corder and Megan Rahl.
Corder and Rahl led the team with three RBIs. Catcher Mackenzie Haag hit a home run for the Seagulls, and Seaside committed only one error.
Klumper went the distance on the mound for Seaside, striking out eight Cheesemakers.

Warrenton starting to come together
An undefeated week improved the Warriors record to 5-9 on the season and 4-3 over their last seven games. A recent seven-game stretch included a 2-1 loss to Clatskanie and a 5-3 loss to Banks.
Warrenton started off the week with a 19-0 victory over Portland Adventist Academy on Wednesday. The Warriors had three hits from Natalie Pike and Lucy Smith, while Scarlet Anderson had six RBIs. On the mound Anderson and Gracelyn Brown pitched a no hitter and allowed just one walk in five innings.
Saturday saw the Warriors win a double-header against Corbett by scores of 8-4 and 10-3.
Anderson struck out 11 batters and gave up just two earned runs in seven innings. Hannah Leavitt led the Warriors with three runs batted in, and Pike reached base in all four plate appearances.
In the 10-3 victory, Warrenton raced out to an 8-1 lead after three innings. Despite having just five hits, the Warriors were able to score runs through walks and stolen bases.
Lucy Smith led the team with three RBIs. Pike and Natalie Davis had two each. Brown struck out nine and gave up two earned runs in seven innings.
After the week, Warrenton sat at 3-2 in league play behind Banks and Rainier.

Knappa keeping pace
After a three-game sweep of Vernonia/ Jewell, Knappa moved to 6-0 in league play and 12-3 overall. The Loggers are currently No. 14 in the 2A Oregon School Activities Association rankings.
The Loggers defeated Vernonia/ Jewell 15-2 and 22-7 on Friday afternoon. Next up for them is a three-game series against Gervais starting on Wednesday.
