The early-season goal for Warrenton baseball has been to find depth behind senior pitchers Talon McGrorty and Odin Wilson.
The Warriors have used a number of pitchers this season in hopes of shoring up their depth on the days McGrorty plays shortstop.
With the performance of sophomore Ryan Palmer on Saturday, the Warriors may have found the answer.
Palmer pitched against second place Valley Catholic, rebounding after a rough start. He pitched 5.1 innings and allowed two earned runs. A two-run homer by Valley Catholic shortstop Will Erickson opened the scoring, but a five-run third inning from the Warriors broke the game open.
The Warriors had success against Valley Catholic pitchers Trevor Yee, Brandon Yee and Luke Ehmke. In total, Warrenton registered 11 hits, including a blast from McGrorty in the sixth inning. Ryder Sturgell led the Warriors with three hits.
With a record of 6-0, the Warriors sit atop the 3A-SD1 Special District standings after defeating Horizon Christian and Valley Catholic. The last team with one loss the Warriors have yet to play is 4-1 Banks, whom Warrenton is scheduled to play Friday.
