Pump failure leads to sewage overflow in Astoria

A mechanical failure at a pump station led to a sewage overflow that discharged into the Columbia River, the city of Astoria said Tuesday.
Crews were working to restore functionality to Pump Station 1 that led to the overflow at the 45th Street outfall.

Although city crews were managing the situation, intermittent overflows were expected to continue during periods of heavy rain until full repairs to the pump station can be completed.

The public is advised to avoid direct contact with water in the river near the 45th Street outfall for at least the next 72 hours, and to avoid swimming, wading or engaging in other recreational water activities until further notice. People should also keep children and pets away from the shoreline and riverbank in the vicinity.
