Baseball, softball teams return home

Most local teams returned home from their spring break road trips.
Astoria softball looked to jump start the season after a winless trip; Warrenton baseball took on two top 4A teams, and Knappa boys had an early season showdown against top three teams in 2A.

Astoria softball wins third in a row
Sophomore Taryen Wray made her presence felt in more ways than one this weekend.
Friday afternoon saw her pitch a complete game and strike out 13 batters in her team’s 8-1 victory over Clatskanie. Then Saturday saw her hit a three-run blast in the top of the seventh to help Astoria stun Stayton High School.
After trailing 6-2 going into the seventh, Astoria put together a rally that was capped off by Wray. Her home run helped the Fishermen extend their winning streak to three games in a row.
The Fishermen now sit at 5-2-1 with league play set to begin this week. Astoria travels to Tillamook for a Thursday afternoon game.

Astoria boys baseball loses to Estacada
Astoria boys baseball saw their mini-winning streak end against Estacada.
After defeating Corbett and Rainier, the Fishermen were not successful in an attempt to win three in a row. The Fishermen had a rough fielding game and ended up losing 13-4 in six innings. The Fishermen made four errors on the day, which led to nine unearned runs.
Astoria is scheduled to play two more nonleague games against Molalla and Banks before starting league play on Friday.

Warrenton baseball holds its own
Being a defending state champion has its perks, but also some pitfalls.
The pitfalls for Warrenton baseball include a gauntlet on the nonleague schedule. The Warriors went 2-1 in the Challenger Classic and continued their difficult road schedule with two games against 4A opponents.
On Thursday the Warriors took on Newport, and Saturday saw Warrenton battle two-time defending 4A state champions Scappoose.
Thursday was all about the McGrorty twins.
Talon McGrorty pitched a complete game and nine strikeouts. He also went 3-4 at the plate with a home run. Tyson McGrorty was not to be outdone. He went 2-3 with two walks and a home run himself.
Ryan Palmer and Zephan Pierce also contributed for Warrenton with two hits each as the Warriors were victorious 10-3.
On Saturday, poor fielding doomed the Warriors.
The Warriors were down 4-2 going into the bottom of the fourth inning, but an eight-run inning by Scappoose put things away early.
Warrenton is set to begin league play this week.

Good week for Seaside baseball
Seaside baseball capped off a solid week with two well-pitched games against Valley Catholic and Evergreen High School of Washington.
After losing a close game to Cascade, the Seagulls defeated Valley Catholic 8-2 and Evergreen High School 3-0.
Catcher Tallen Kraushaar carried the Seagulls offense against Valley as he had two hits, four runs batted in and a home run. Kraushaar had two of the Seagulls five hits and helped guide the Seagulls pitchers to a one-hit shutout.
Saturday saw pitchers Hayden Halsen and Conner Long give up just four combined hits, and the Seagulls scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to take home the victory.
Seaside starts league play against Scappoose on Tuesday.

Knappa baseball gets revenge from title game
Like Warrenton, Knappa baseball had its own difficult schedule.
The Loggers tested themselves against 2A No. 1 Kennedy High School on Thursday and then had a rematch against reigning 2A state champion Umpqua Valley Christian on Saturday.
Knappa fell 5-0 to Kennedy as Trojans pitcher Henry Beyer was stellar on the mound. The Loggers bounced back behind a great game from pitcher Lukas Masters to defeat Umpqua 2-1 on Saturday and get revenge from last season’s championship game.
Masters went 7 innings, struck out nine batters and allowed just one run on 101 pitches. Behind a Karson Casper RBI and three Ethan Olson stolen bases, the Loggers found a way to score enough runs to get an early season win against the No. 3 ranked Monarchs.
