In One Ear: Behemoth basket

Thanks to Astoria nautical writer Peter Marsh for this gem: An Oregon business in Tualatin, The Garden Corner, is boasting about its newest rendition of what it refers to as the Spring 2025 Special Edition of the World’s Largest Hanging Basket, according to Tualatin Life.

So, how big is it? It weighs almost 3 tons, and is 16 feet tall and 10 feet wide. “I was wondering late at night what the world’s largest hanging basket would be, what it would look like,” Garden Center owner, John Karsseboom, said of his 2012 brainstorm. “I took that idea to Don Sprague, who did all the welding, and we drew it up at a Mexican restaurant.”

But no, he doesn’t have the World’s Largest Hanging Basket record, not by a long shot. The official World’s Largest Hanging Basket was in Belgium, according to Guinness World Records. Created in 2000 by Jos De Troyer, it was 34 feet, 5 inches in diameter, and weighed 49.6 tons.

But … the Belgium basket, unlike the one in Tualatin, was not a permanent fixture. It’s gone. So long live the new (unofficial) basket king. (Photo: The Garden Corner)
