College offers family fun Saturday for Pi Day

Clatsop Community College is planning a family event to celebrate this month’s Pi Day on Saturday from 1:59 to 6 p.m. in Patriot Hall on the college’s Lexington campus.

The free celebration of the mathematical constant is hosted by the college’s Math Department, and is suitable for all ages, but children under 12 need to be accompanied by an adult.

The Pi’d Pi’pipers, the college’s acclaimed band, will perform, and the event will include math games, a Pi-walk, face painting, Pi prizes and more.

Pi’s famous relative — pie — will be offered by the Pi-Phi Chapter of the college;s student honor society, Phi Theta Kappa, for donations. And, of course, pies will be tossed at faculty and college leadership.

Pi is the ratio of any circle’s circumference to the length of its diameter.

The actual Pi Day is March 14, which corresponds to the first three digits of Pi (3.14). The college’s Pi Day is being held on March 15, so here’s how the Math Department has addressed the numerical discrepancy: “We are calling it “pi+0.01”, since pi+0.01 is approximately 3.1415926…+0.01 or 3.1515926…”
