Letter: Peace Corps needs you
Published 12:15 am Saturday, March 8, 2025
Since the Peace Corps was established in 1961, over 240,000 Americans have served in 144 countries. Currently, about 3,300 volunteers (less than half the 7,000 serving prior to the pandemic) work in over 60 countries.
This call to service comes in the wake of a global pandemic that killed over 7 million people. Biodiversity loss and climate change impact communities worldwide. Volunteers work with local counterparts in programs such as health, environment and economic development, living in (often remote) communities, learning and sharing experiences and developing bonds of friendship that last a lifetime.
As a returned Peace Corps volunteer, I can tell you my service was life-changing, enriching, and among the very best decisions that I ever made. I served in Peru from 2006 to 2010. During my first two years of service, I developed an environmental education program centered on cloud forests and páramos (Andean wetlands).
My host sister went on to become an environmental and forestry engineer. I am still in touch with Peruvian host families and work colleagues. I still use my Spanish professionally.
Citizens and lawmakers need to stand up and fully support volunteers. For the past decade, the Peace Corps budget has experienced a decrease in purchasing power when adjusted for inflation. Passage of the bipartisan Peace Corps Reauthorization Act is critical to assure improvement in the health and safety of volunteers. Call your senators, representative, the White House, and reach out to a returned Peace Corps volunteer.
