Scandinavian Midsummer Festival announces court

The Astoria Scandinavian Midsummer Festival Court was formally introduced in Nordic folk dress at Astoria High School on Tuesday.

The 58th annual Astoria Scandinavian Midsummer Festival will take place June 20 to 22 at the Clatsop County Fairgrounds. The festival started in 1968, and is sponsored by the Astoria Scandinavian Heritage Association.

The reigning Miss Scandinavia is Audrey Cereghino, a senior at Astoria High School. She plans on attending George Fox University. She was a Viking Nordic dancer and has been involved with volunteering with her family at many festivals. She has Swedish, Danish and Norwegian heritage.

Senior Miss Denmark, Emily Herzberg, is a senior at Astoria High School, and is sponsored by the Lower Columbia Danish Society. She plans on attending Southern Oregon University. Her Danish heritage comes from her mother’s side of the family. In the past, she has volunteered in the Danish booth.

Junior Miss Denmark, Luna Roberts, is in the third grade at Encore Academy, and is sponsored by the Lower Columbia Danish Society. Her Scandinavian heritage comes from both sides of her family.

Senior Miss Finland, Olivia Atkinson, is a senior at Astoria High School and is sponsored by Friends of Suomi Hall. Olivia plans on attending college to study geology. Her family is from the Oulu region of Finland. She has been involved in the festival in the past.

Junior Miss Finland, Hannah Martin, is in the fifth grade, attends Vose Elementary in Beaverton, and is sponsored by Friends of Suomi Hall. In addition to her Finnish heritage, she has Norwegian, Swedish and Danish heritage.

Senior Miss Iceland, Ava Thornton, is a senior at Warrenton High School. She plans on attending Clatsop Community College before transferring to Southern Oregon University. Her Scandinavian heritage comes from her grandfather.

Senior Miss Norway, Signe Rickenbach, is a senior at Astoria High School, and is sponsored by the Sons of Norway Nidaros Lodge No. 16. After high school, she plans to attend Clatsop Community College and transfer to Oregon State University. Signe has Norwegian, Swedish, and Finnish heritage.

Junior Miss Norway, Ava Pauline Kryzanek, attends fifth grade at Lewis and Clark Elementary School, and is sponsored by the Sons of Norway Nidaros Lodge No. 16. She has Norwegian, Swedish and Danish heritage. She has been a Viking Nordic dancer for three years. Her cousin, Molly Oien, was crowned Miss Scandinavia in 2023.

Senior Miss Sweden, Olive Thompson, is a senior at Astoria High School and is sponsored by VASA Swedish Lodge No. 215. After graduation, she plans on attending a university. Her Scandinavian heritage comes from both sides of her family, and is Swedish, Norwegian and Finnish.

Junior Miss Sweden, Amelia Kingsley Harper, is a second grader at John Jacob Astor Elementary School, and is sponsored by VASA Swedish Lodge No. 215. She is involved with her Swedish heritage. Her sister was Junior Miss Sweden in 2015.

Crown Bearer, Jameson Landwehr, attends Lewis and Clark Elementary School and has Swedish, Danish and Norwegian heritage on his father’s side and Norwegian and Finnish heritage on his mother’s side. His father was Crown Bearer in 1999, and his aunt was Senior Miss Denmark in 2015.

Senior Court Chaperone, Melissa Schacher, works for the Clatsop Care Center Health District. She has been involved in the festival since she was a child and has been a junior and senior princess on the court, a judge, on the princess committee and a volunteer in the Finnish booth.

Junior Court Chaperone, Megan Schacher, daughter of Melissa Schacher, is a nurse in Astoria. She has been involved in the festival her whole life and has a strong connection to her Finnish heritage. She served as Senior Miss Finland in 2017 and went on to be crowned Miss Scandinavia.
