In One Ear: Shark shutterbug

We know that sharks all over the world, even at the Cove in Seaside, like to take a bite out of the occasional human or surfboard. But cameras? Apparently so.

While feeding the sharks in February, Andrea Ramos Nascimento got a shark’s-mouth view of the world when a tiger shark snatched up his Insta360 X4 camera off the coast of Freeport, The Bahamas, according to Petapixel.

Once in the shark’s mouth, the camera swiveled around, showing a view of the shark’s gills and teeth, then a view of the divers outside his mouth (shown). Eventually, the shark was no longer amused with his capture, and spat it out. The diver was able to retrieve the camera with the footage unharmed.

“The tiger sharks of Tiger Beach have a unique hobby: stealing cameras,” Nascimento posted on Instagram (@alohadivers_okinawa). “Shiny objects, lights and sounds catch their attention, and since they don’t have hands, they explore everything with their mouths.

“Some divers have watched their GoPros disappear into a shark’s mouth, only to see it swim away like it just won a prize! So, if you come here, hold on tight to your camera … or accept that a tiger shark might be the new owner.” (Screenshot: Andrea Ramos Nascimento)
