Letter: Diminishing greatness

Our nation, which once aspired to greatness, is plummeting into fascism, bigotry and economic oppression. I worry for the country my grandchildren will inherit as the MAGA movement destroys the promise that was once this country. Pondering this, I realize I never understood what “Make America Great Again” means. I don’t think MAGA people do, either.

Again? We, as a people, were never “great,” but we damned well aspired to be. We were headed in that direction, and we certainly had moments of greatness. Ending slavery. Defeating fascism in World War II. Civil rights advances. Strides in science to defeat diseases that were killing or crippling millions. The emancipation of women. Safer workplaces and a safer food supply. Ending the cruelty of child labor. These are a few of the things that we, as a nation, did in our ongoing quest to become great.

Now, the rule of law has been discarded. Humaneness and compassion are ridiculed. Science is being vilified. Our government, originally designed to protect and provide for the common good, is being purged of everything that accomplishes those goals. These things, where we actually were achieving greatness, are all being either diminished or reversed.

I believe the “greatness” of a nation can be found in those things. But MAGA doesn’t, and has sold this nation’s soul to satisfy their cancerous need to fear and hate someone or something. They will either kill or enslave us all, ultimately destroying any chance of America achieving true greatness.
