With injured senior guard Shelby Bruney in uniform for the first time this season, Astoria’s senior night on Tuesday was off to a good start.
Bruney, who tore her ACL during summer ball, was in uniform and received cheers and a standing ovation from fans as she was announced in the starting lineup for the last time. Bruney went on to score the opening basket of the game as St. Helens let Astoria control the opening tip to give Bruney a chance to score and walk off the court for the last time.
The night turned sour for the Fishermen after that.
St. Helens hit nine three-pointers to Astoria’s none, and the Fishermen missed 13 of 24 free throws as the Lions upset Astoria, 52-43. The loss ended the Fishermen’s bid for a Cowapa League title, as the team finished in second place, one game behind Seaside.
Though the Fishermen came out on the losing end, senior Malory Dundas scored 22 points on her senior night. Roberta Chavez scored 11 for the Fishermen.
For St. Helens, Madelyn Hancock poured in 27 points, including five three-pointers. Point guard Devan Lee added 19 points for the Lions.
The Fishermen wrapped up their regular season with a nonleague game against No. 7 Marist Catholic on Friday; that game was played after The Astorian’s press deadline. Astoria should qualify for the 4A state tournament, but won’t learn its first opponent until the weekend.
The Seaside girls will have a home playoff game on March 7, but their opponent won’t be known until the weekend.
Astoria boys wrap up season
The Astoria boys played an inspired game Tuesday against St. Helens, but came up one possession short. The Fishermen were not able to get a shot off in the closing seconds and lost their final game of the season, 68-65.
Despite the 4-19 record, Astoria showed improvement throughout the second half of the year and should return all but one player from this season’s roster.
The Fishermen saw four players hit double figures in the loss. Kanon Huber led the way with 20 points, Cooper Jones had 17, Brayden Wintersteen had 14 and Quin Gohr scored 10.
Seaside boys claim title
The Seagulls boys basketball team beat Tillamook, 48-42, on Tuesday to claim the Cowapa League regular season title. The win, the 12th in a row for Seaside, gave the team an 11-1 league record.
Next up for the Seaside boys will be a home playoff game against Philomath High School on March 8.
Warrenton boys fall in playoffs
Whenever the Scio boys basketball team makes history, the Warrenton Warriors seem to be on the wrong side.
The last time Scio boys won a playoff game was in 1981, when they beat Warrenton in the state championship. On Wednesday, the Loggers snapped their 44-year playoff drought by beating Warrenton, 66-44, in a state tournament game.
The Warriors finish their season with a 15-12 record.
