In One Ear: ‘There’s hope’

On Valentine’s Day morning, Deadline rocked the Goonie world with the headline: “Potsy Ponciroli Tapped To Pen ‘The Goonies’ Sequel For Warner Bros.” What?

First of all, who’s Potsy Ponciroli? His uninformative Internet Movie Database page says he’s a “ … director and writer, known for Old Henry (2021), Jay and Silent Bob Reboot (2019) and Ted K (2021) … Before he got into movies he worked in music videos and filming those.” Dateline says he’s also the co-founder of Hideout Pictures, among other credits.

Why he was chosen to write the sequel is a complete mystery. Everyone assumed it would be Christopher Columbus, who wrote the original script. Other than the Potsy announcement, little else was disclosed.

“Plot details are under wraps, and no director is currently attached,” Deadline added. “Steven Spielberg, Kristie Macosko Krieger and Holly Bario will produce for Amblin Entertainment (Spielberg is chairman of Amblin) alongside Chris Columbus, with Lauren Shuler Donner (widow of Richard Donner, the original movie’s director) exec producing.”

The announcement comes shortly after the celebration of Ke Huy Quan’s (Data in “The Goonies”) hand-and-footprint ceremony at TCL Chinese Theater in Hollywood, when several original cast members of “The Goonies” turned up. Naturally, they talked a bit about wanting a sequel, but it was Corey Feldman (Mouth) who nailed it.

“All I can say is, get us all together,” Feldman (pictured) told Variety. “Everybody is looking good. Sean’s looking good. Josh is looking good. We’re all looking good still, and we’re all alive. Goonies never say die … There’s hope.” (Photo: coreyfeldman.net)
