I recently visited the city of Astoria’s website and came across Resolution 20-22, titled “A Resolution to Reaffirm the City of Astoria’s Commitment to Being a Community Welcoming Diversity, Embracing Equity and Inclusion, and Where All Are Accepted, Valued, Respected, and Safe.”

In these challenging times, it is truly heartening to see such a resolution prominently displayed on the city’s webpage. This resolution signifies the city’s unwavering commitment to fostering a community where diversity is celebrated, and equity and inclusion are not just ideals, but practiced principles.

At a time when many government departments, agencies and large corporations seem to be retreating from these fundamental concepts, the city of Astoria’s courage and dedication truly stand out. The resolution is not only a declaration of values, but also a call to action for all of us to uphold and protect these principles in our daily lives.

I commend the city of Astoria for its commitment to creating a welcoming, inclusive and safe community for all residents. This resolution should inspire other cities and organizations to follow suit and prioritize the well-being and dignity of every individual.
