Astoria Chapter DAR anounces contest winners, anniversary celebration

The Astoria chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution has announced that Josephine Giles, a student at Lewis and Clark Elementary School, is the fifth-grade winner of the organization’s American history essay contest.

Her essay, “Enjoying a New Kind of Tea Party,” was about the Edenton Tea Party in October 1774.
In second place was Isabella Vega of Pacific Ridge Elementary School in Seaside.
Giles also designed a poster for the Junior American Citizens contest, which won another first-place citation.

The theme for this year’s contest was “Sailing with the Stars and Stripes to Celebrate the 250th Birthday of the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps.” Both winning entries have been sent to the state chairmen for judging with other entries from chapters around Oregon.
The Astoria chapter will meet at 11 a.m. Feb. 19 at the Astoria Golf and Country Club, where it will celebrate the 105th anniversary of the chapter’s organization on Feb. 20, 1920. Members attending and women interested in membership may contact Sue Glen at 503-861-0574.
