Prep wrestling: Warrenton wins Beach Brawl tournament

The Warrenton High School team won the annual Beach Brawl wrestling tournament at Ilwaco High School Saturday against competition from 15 schools. Three Warriors won their weight classes: senior Ryder Sturgell at 144 pounds, junior Devon Sturgell at 175 and senior Kaison Smith at 285, and three teammates were runners-up in their divisions. Both Warrenton girls competing won their weight classes.

ILWACO, Wash. — Warrenton celebrated Saturday after winning the annual Beach Brawl wrestling tournament at Ilwaco High School.

Against competition from 15 schools, the Warriors earned 178 points for first, 6½ points ahead of Castle Rock and two other Washington schools, Kelso and Woodland. Astoria placed fifth with 98.5.

Consistency through the weight classes propelled Warrenton to the team win. There were individual championships for senior Ryder Sturgell at 144 pounds, junior Devon Sturgell at 175 and senior Kaison Smith at 285.

Warriors earning second-place medals were freshman Rayce Sturgell at 106 pounds, sophomore Kyle Bond at 113, and senior Mason Bell at 144. Sean Irwin, a junior, placed third at 190.

Astoria earned an individual championship from sophomore Beau Smith, who pinned all four of his opponents at 138 pounds.

The Fishermen had two second-place medals from junior Phoenix Nestor at 175 and sophomore Arthur Duryea at 215.

Junior Sean Irwin placed third at 190 and there were fourth-place medals for sophomore Asher Hotseth at 132, junior Obie McCarley at 144 and Adrian Balli at 285.

For the girls, Warrenton senior Kaidynce Daniels won the 145-pound division and sophomore Kylie Malkemus won at 155. Both won their two matches with pins.
