Ear: Treatment

“The Goonies” world is all abuzz with speculation about an announcement that appeared in Deadline on Jan. 15.

After writing about various Warner Bros. goings-on and several new projects slated for 2025, fairly far along into the article, there appears this puzzling paragraph:

“ … Franchise hopes abound down the road in Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum, Practical Magic 2, DC’s Clayface and Supergirl, Drew Goddard’s incoming script for a new Matrix, a new Gremlins from Christopher Columbus and a Goonies treatment.”

Note: In case you’re wondering, MasterClass says treatments, a prescreenplay phase, “contain detailed descriptions of the setting, theme, character roles, and plot in order to show how the story will play out for the audience.”

Some show business writers interpret the Deadline sentence to mean that Chris Columbus is doing both the “Gremlins” and the “Goonies” treatment; others opine he’s only working on “Gremlins.” Time will tell. (Photo: Warner Bros.)
