- Astoria senior swimmers pose after being presented with their signed kickboards. Thursday was senior day for the Astoria team, and each senior receives a kickboard signed by every member of the team. The Fishermen also defeated Scappoose in a dual meet.
Thursday was senior night for Astoria High School swimmers, which meant it was time again for an aquatic tradition.
Astoria swimming gives each of its seniors a kickboard that has been signed by every member of the team.
There was other business to attend to as well Thursday: The Fishermen had a dual meet against Scappoose, at the Astoria Aquatic Center. Both the boys and girls were victorious. The girls won 117 to 41, while the boys score was closer, 98-71.
Head coach Paul Gascoigne said the Fishermen had a number of personal best times and standout swimmers.
The Lady Fishermen won all but one event in their performance. Senior Hazel Towsey-French and Rylie Knight had wins in both the relay and individual events, while Josie Reeves and Lillian Smith claimed victories.
On the boys side, it was a mix of veteran and freshmen standouts.
Seniors Finn Bizzell, Gabriel White and Casey Dopp finished first place in both the 200-yard medley relay and 200-yard freestyle relay. Junior John Ero joined them in victory lane for both events as well as individual events.
Freshmen Fishermen Samuel Reid, Roarke Struve, Konrad Struve and Toby Thomas have improved their times throughout the season. Roarke Struve finished first in the 200-yard freestyle and second in the 500-yard freestyle, while Reid and Konrad Struve finished first and second, respectively, in the 100-yard backstroke.
