Talk of new ‘Goonies’ film fuels frenzy

- "The Goonies," the 1985 action movie that was filmed Oregon, may be due for a sequel — or maybe not.
How devoted are fans of “The Goonies,” the 1985 adventure movie that filmed on location in Astoria? Well, let’s just put it this way. A very brief, very vague mention of a “Goonies” project — a sequel? A revival? A reboot? — in Deadline has prompted a media geek-out, including a segment on the “Today” show.
Never mind that the Deadline story is a lengthy, insider-ish take on what’s going on at the Warner Bros. Motion Picture Group as it faces changes in 2025. All it takes for “Goonies” diehards to get excited, apparently, is one line in the article.
In mentioning that Warners is, among other things, pursuing franchise projects, the kind of intellectual property that presumably already has a following, the article says: “Franchise hopes abound down the road in ‘Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum,’ ‘Practical Magic 2,′ DC’s ‘Clayface’ and ‘Supergirl,’ Drew Goddard’s incoming script for a new ‘Matrix,’ a new ‘Gremlins’ from Christopher Columbus and a ‘Goonies’ treatment.”
Not much detail, is there? But that hasn’t stopped breathless reports of “Goonies 2,” a ”new ‘Goonies’ movie,” etc., etc., from taking off online. Among the pile-on was a segment Friday morning during the “Today” show “Pop Start” report. Carson Daly first teased that new “Goonies” news was coming up, which prompted “Today” cohost Savannah Guthrie to reveal a gap in her pop culture knowledge.
“If I tell you guys that I’ve never seen ‘The Goonies,’ can we still be friends?” Guthrie asked co-host Craig Melvin, and Daly.
“You have to have either seen ‘Goonies’ or ‘Stand By Me,’” Daly said, mentioning yet another ‘80s youth-friendly movie that also happened to film on location in Oregon.
“You know, I don’t know if I have,” Guthrie said.
“We’ve got a lot of work to do,” Melvin said.
“OK, I’ll do that this weekend,” Guthrie said.
Later in the show, Daly introduced the report, which did have a question mark in the on-screen chyron, or caption: “’Goonies’ sequel in the works?”
Citing the Deadline story, Daly said the “Goonies never say die” catchphrase from the movie might be accurate, since a possible “Goonies” project was reportedly in development.
Co-host Al Roker then delivered his own “hot take,” namely that “some things shouldn’t be redone.”
“I’m shocked to hear you say that,” Guthrie said, “because you’ve been in, like, ‘Ghostbusters 6.’”
As everyone laughed, Daly said to Roker, “Finish your sentence — ‘unless I’m in it.’”
This isn’t the first time word has circulated about a potential return to “Goonies” world. In September, for example, a story in the U.S. Sun, the stateside edition of the British tabloid, The Sun, claimed, “Classic 80s blockbuster film The Goonies to film a SEQUEL with many of original cast to star.”
That thunderbolt of info was attributed to an unnamed source, who also said that the plan was “to start developing the ideas for the follow up next summer, with a possible release date of 2026 or 2027″; and “It’s likely major stars will come back but the possibilities of where to take the sequel are endless.”
However, not long after that rumor zinged around the Internet, original “Goonies” cast members Martha Plimpton and Corey Feldman said it wasn’t true.
“People, there is no ‘Goonies 2′ script, there is no one ‘attached,’” Plimpton wrote on Instagram, as Variety reported.
In more “Goonies” news, the movie’s 40th anniversary will be celebrated this year at “Goonies Weekend” events, coming up June 5-8 in Astoria. “The Goonies” is also available to rent or buy via Amazon Prime Video.
