Ear: Axial

The Axial Seamount (pictured), about 300 miles off the Oregon Coast, has making the news lately, with scary headlines about an imminent eruption. Never fear, check out the Axial Seamount blog, which chronicles eruption forecasts, for what’s really going on.

The blog says the “most active submarine volcano in the N.E. Pacific” has erupted in 1998, 2011 and 2015, yet with no apparent effect onshore. Now the seamount is being monitored by the “world’s first underwater volcano observatory,” which is attached to a regional cabled array that transmits its activity in real-time.

The volcano is swelling, but the blog says there’s “no change in our latest eruption forecast of ‘before the end of 2025.’” Stay tuned. (Image: National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration)
