Bob Hauer, a clinical lab scientist at Columbia Memorial Hospital for 50 years, is retiring.

His health care career began at the Oregon Institute of Technology, and ended with a yearlong internship at Tampa General Hospital in Florida.

In 1974, after the acquisition of St. Mary’s Hospital by Columbia Hospital, he returned to Astoria and joined the staff. After Columbia Memorial Hospital opened in 1977, he moved to the new facility.

Initially involved in hands-on tasks like blood draws and testing, he adapted to technological advancements that improved lab efficiency.
