Obit: David Clyde 2

On Nov. 30, David Timothy Schalk Sr., of Las Vegas, fondly called “Grumpy” by the family, a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, passed away after an extended illness at the age of 80 with his family was by his side.

He was born in Elgin, Nebraska, to Anthony and Agnes (Klink) Schalk, on Nov. 17, 1944. He moved with his family to Astoria when he was young, where he graduated from Astoria High School.

After graduation he joined the U.S. Air Force, serving in Guam, working in airplane maintenance.

After leaving the Air Force, he moved back to Astoria, married Julie Palak, and they had two children.

They later divorced, and he married Teresa (Moeller) Stultz. They had just celebrated their 48th wedding anniversary shortly before he passed away.

He worked at the Astoria Plywood Mill until its close. Then he went on to work for Walluski Western in Astoria before moving to Las Vegas in April 2000, where he joined the Local 88 Sheet Metal Union, from which he retired.

He had a strong work ethic that he instilled in his children, and a great sense of humor, and would get on a kick and laugh for extended periods of time, which made the rest of the family laugh right along with him.

He will be missed by all who knew him.

Two of his favorite pastimes were clam digging on the Oregon Coast and scuba diving in the Caribbean. He enjoyed them whenever he got the opportunity.

He loved his children and grandchildren, and always wanted to be there for them. He enjoyed celebrating their accomplishments and helping them whenever needed.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his daughter, Wendy Ellis; and sisters, Madonna Schalk, Beverly “Bubbles” Barnes and Celestine “Sally” Beckman; and brother, Dennis Schalk.

He is survived by his wife, Teresa; children, David T. Schalk Jr., of Astoria, Kenneth (Carrie) Stultz Jr., of Pahrump, Nevada, Robert (Brandi) Stultz Sr., of Las Vegas, and Vicki (Pat) O’Brien, of Astoria; his grandchildren, Dylan Schalk, Robert Stultz Jr., Deidre Wilson, Debbie Stultz, Brett Stultz, Kaitlynn Stultz, Cade O’Brien and Hailey O’Brien; three great-grandchildren; his brother, James Schalk; sisters, Barbara Gustafson, Lucretia “Pat” Luettel, Norma Kelley and Maxine “Mickey” Miller; and numerous nieces and nephews.

There will be a private family memorial at a later date.

Donations may be made in his name to any veterans’ organization.
