Wrestlers take to the mat

After opening up the season in Knappa, local high school wrestlers traveled to Rainier and Estacada for weekend invitationals.

Astoria, Knappa and Warrenton traveled to Rainier for the Kelly Bledsoe Invitational, while Seaside High School took part in the Estacada Invitational.

Saturday was a good day for Warrenton boys wrestling as they had a number of top three finishes.

The Warriors finished fifth out of 20 teams with a total team score of 136.5, which was one point behind Scappoose for the top score among the Oregon teams in attendance. Castle Rock, of Washington state, won the meet with a score of 223.0.

Rayce Sturgell finished in fourth place in the 106-pound division. He was joined by Mason Bell, Ryder Sturgell, Devon Sturgell, Sean Irwin and Kaison Smith in the top four positions. Bell took home third place in the 150-pound division, Sturgell finished second at 157 pounds, Devon Sturgell finished second at 175 pounds, Irwin was fourth at 190 pounds and Smith brought home a first place at 285 pounds.

Landon Reed was the lone top four finisher for Astoria as he came home fourth place at 175 pounds. Astoria finished 17th with a total of 41 points and Knappa finished 20th with a team score of six.

Knappa girls shine at Kelly Bledsoe

Knappa girls wrestling led the way for the local teams with an eighth-place finish and a total team score of 67 points. Astoria, with 25 points, and Warrenton, with 23 points, finished 13th and 14th.

Kiya Roe took home the first place hardware in the 105-pound division. She was joined in the top four by Kareena Crawford, who was second place at 110 pounds and Caidence Crawford, who finished third at 135 pounds.

Kaidynce Daniels finished fourth place at 145 pounds for Warrenton, while Isabella Ramirez placed third at 235 pounds for Astoria.

Seaside wrestling at Estacada

Seaside traveled to Estacada and came home ninth place out of 13 teams.

The Seagulls had three athletes place in the top six Saturday. Brayden Cooley finished in second place at 157 pounds, Tristin Erspaner was sixth place at 113 pounds and Henry Rollins was second place at 120 pounds.
