Ear: Weird

Apropos for Thanksgiving, “14 Strange Thanksgiving Traditions That Everyone Pretends Aren’t Weird,” courtesy of Ranker.com. Here are just a few:

Thanksgiving was Ragamuffin Day, when children would dress up in rags and go from door to door asking, “Anything for Thanksgiving?” to get pennies or a bit of fruit or candy. There were even ragamuffin parades, but the tradition faded with the arrival of the Great Depression.

Then there’s the Indiana Flaming Turkey Toss. The turkey, dressed in an infant onesie, was doused with lighter fluid, attached to a chain, lit on fire, then swung and tossed across a football field. Thankfully, this event was discontinued in 2006.

And finally, Frozen Turkey Bowling popped up in the 1980s, started by a supermarket worker named Derrick Johnson. Both flame-tossing and bowling Butterball turkeys were frowned upon by Butterball, who finally sent Johnson a cease and desist letter. (Photo: Library of Congress)
