Carl Richard McLaughlin passed away on Nov. 8, at 11:17 p.m., at the Beaverton home of his brother and sister-in-law, Charles and Hillary McLaughlin. He was 69 years old.

He was born to Charles Lee McLaughlin and Joan Ardelle Hall, in Bakersfield, California, on Dec. 6, 1954.

Preceding Carl in death were his mother, and two of his siblings, Craig and Chris McLaughlin. Joan died Jan. 3, 2015, Craig on March 13, 2016, and Chris on April 3, 1983.

Carl is survived by his daughters, Carly Field, and her spouse, Matt Field, and Kristin McLaughlin, and her spouse, Yovanni del Rio; his father, Charles Lee McLaughlin, and stepmother, Barbara Schramm McLaughlin; his brother, Charles McLaughlin, and his spouse, Hillary; his half-brother, Paul McLaughlin (son of Jeanie Hall McLaughlin, Carl’s father’s second wife), and his spouse, Judi; step-sister, Erika Branch (daughter of Barbara), and her spouse, Jason; and his half-brothers, Mark McLaughlin, and his spouse, Kate Romanov, and David McLaughlin, and his spouse, Jackie (sons of Barbara and Charles McLaughlin).

He is also survived by his step-grandchildren, Josie, Melody and Ethan Field; and numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, grandnieces and nephews, and great-grandnieces and nephews.

Though Carl received his grade school education in Bakersfield, graduating from high school in 1972, he chose to attend the University of Houston, in Houston, to seek his undergraduate degree. However, he returned to Bakersfield after one semester.

Then he was on to Cannon Beach in 1975 to join his brother, Chris, and eventually, brother Charles, in 1979, as well as his future wife, Mary Egbert, the mother of his two daughters, who also survives.

It was at this time in his life when he seriously pursued a career in music by founding two bands, in which he played lead guitar and sang, Snake Eyes and the award-winning Whizkey Stik, the latter still heard on Spotify and Youtube.

An album titled “On the Level,” of music recorded by Whizkey Stik in the 1980s, was released in 2016. One of their songs, “Dirty Words,” was featured on a KGON radio compilation album in 1980.

Carl not only played guitar and sang, but was also a composer and lyricist. His father and stepmother had the honor of playing on stage with Carl in his later life.

For many years, he worked as a computer technician in the Portland area while living in his Hillsboro home. He was a talented wood carver, carpenter and musical instrument designer.

While on stage, a passionate performer; off-stage, he was a quiet and reserved man, kind and gentle. Carl’s life has brought honor, as well as a positive influence, to the McLaughlin clan, his immediate and extended family, and especially in his role as a son, brother and father.

Those who knew and loved Carl mourn his loss. He will never, ever be forgotten.
