Letter: Real funny

In regard to Olivia Palmer’s “Alarms grow louder over federal flood plain rules,” (The Astorian, Oct. 31): Thank you for the story.

It’s very interesting how the businessmen/politicians of Warrenton are bald-faced using the remarkably cavalier and nakedly self-interested argument that by denying working-class people homes of their own in the Jeffers Garden and Miles Crossing wetlands, that the Federal Emergency Management Agency is out to destroy the American dream.

The Warrenton wetlands bear a remarkable resemblance to those remaining up the river, all the way to Portland, only grander. And how could anyone possibly need more stores to buy more cheap plastic stuff? On a wetland (again)?

As for the greed and carelessness of some humans, Vanport comes immediately to mind. We’re right up against terrible environmental damage caused by drought and flooding, disrupted soils, exacerbated by the nearly complete loss of planetary wetlands, the very lungs of the earth.

Funny that these guys believe climate catastrophe is a toy to be played with. Real funny.

Also, it would have been useful to have gotten the story on what’s up with the new FEMA decision. This reader wants to know!
