Local runners claim district championships

Wednesday and Thursday were successful days for local high school cross-country runners as three out of four schools saw titles.
Knappa and Warrenton traveled to Tigard for the 3A/2A/1A SD-1 District 1 Championships, while Astoria and Seaside returned to Alderbrook Golf Course in Tillamook for a Halloween run.
For the Knappa boys, it was a dominating day as Orrin Jacobson, Oskar Peitsch, Joshua Peterson and Rowdy Justus all finished in the top eight. With the performance, Knappa claimed not only the league title, but also the district championship.
Jacobson and Peitsch finished first and second, Peterson was fourth and Justus was eighth. Jacobson, Peitsch and Justus set personal best times Wednesday at Tigard. Jacobson ran a 17:02.8, which was 43 seconds faster than his previous best time. Peitsch edged out his time of 17:06.8 at the Harvest Classic with a 17:06.5 and Justus improved 21 seconds from his previous best time, running a 17:36.4 on Wednesday.
Gavin Jasper and Soren Brown were the fifth- and sixth-place runners for the Loggers as they finished 11th and 12th on the day. Jasper also came home in a personal best of 17:45.70.
The Knappa girls were also crowned league champions as they had a fifth-place finish in the 1A/2A/3A district championships.
Emma Jackson led the Loggers across the finish line in 24th place. She was followed by Kiya Roe in 26th place. Roe set a new personal best of 21:56.50. Mylie Lempea was 30th place, Aemilia Graham was 35th place and Zoey Lackey finished 38th place, while setting another personal best time of 22:42.80.
Warrenton sees good improvement
With Jayden Warner not running on Wednesday, Joshuah Baker was the top finisher for Warrenton in a time of 18:54.60. This was good for 35th overall. He was followed by junior Zachery Flock, sophomore James Hallock and freshmen duo Elijah Hawkins and Finley Marshall.
Flock continued his great close to the season as he set another personal time of 19:03.10. This is the third consecutive race that Flock has set a personal best mark.
For the girls, Payten Buckelew was the top finisher in 25th place. Buckelew finished in between the Knappa duo of Jackson and Roe in a time of 21:52.20. She was followed home by Brenna Qualm in 61st place and Emma Stevens in 77th.
Local runners bring home Cowapa League titles
Astoria and Seaside saw Cowapa League titles as both William Laman and Maddie Menke won their respective races.
After blazing Alderbrook Golf Course eight days ago, Laman ran just fast enough on Thursday to take home the title.
Laman outlasted Diego Velazquez, of Tillamook, in a time of 16:30.57. Velazquez had the race of his life for the Cheesemakers as he ran a 30 second personal best out of nowhere to challenge Laman throughout the race. Velazquez finished with a time of 16:32.9.
Recker Harvey, in 18th place, Noah Kistner, in 21st place, Finnegan Dwyer, in 22nd place and Braedon Long, in 31st place, were the other scorers for the Fishermen on Halloween morning. Kistner ran a personal best time of 19:40.96.
Kyle Weichal continued his strong season with a 13th place finish to lead home his Seaside crew. He ran a time of 18:54.73, while his teammate Henry Rollins ran a personal best of 19:07.83 in his 17th place finish. Hunter Shakespear, in 24th place, Alex Bilyeu, in 28th place, and Dexter Jenks, in 30th place, were the other scorers for Seaside.
On the girls side, Menke was able to cruise home to her title. Her time of 19:46.41 was more than 30 seconds faster than Taylor Bourgoine, of Scappoose. Ella Clyde was the second runner for Seaside with an 11th place finish.
Astoria were led home by Aster Dean. Dean finished 10th place overall in a time of 23:09.82. Astoria Froehle, in 16th place, and Ash Lacy, in 20th place, were the other two finishers for the Fishermen. Lacy set a new personal best time with a 30:56.62.
