Astoria High School boys soccer kept their Cowapa League title hopes alive with a thrilling 3-2 victory against Scappoose on Thursday.

The Indians and Fishermen entered Thursday in a battle for second place behind Tillamook, and the two teams fought all night long. Astoria took an early 2-0 lead behind goals from Orrick Evans and Ian McCormick. Scappoose got one back right before halftime on a penalty kick.

Edwuard Lepe Ramirez scored a clinical goal off a free kick midway through the second half. Ramirez flicked a Walker Steele free kick with the back of his head into the corner of the net. Scappoose would later score another goal off a penalty kick as an Astoria foul in the box resulted in the Indians putting another one away.

Despite the Indians pressing much of the game, the Fishermen’s backline held steady to claim the decisive victory and gave the seniors a chance to celebrate one last home win.

The victory moves Astoria’s record to 6-2-1 in league play, a game behind Tillamook with just one to play. After splitting with the Cheesemakers, the Fishermen will need rival Seaside to beat Tillamook in order to tie for the league title.

Tuesday will be the last regular season game for Astoria as they travel to St. Helens for one final tuneup before state playoffs start.

Seaside boys soccer ends slide

Seaside High School boys soccer finally stopped their losing streak as they defeated St. Helens 1-0 on Thursday. The victory moved them to 4-4-1 in league play and 6-6-1 overall.

With one game remaining against No. 14 Tillamook, the Seagulls have a chance to finish the season out on a high note Tuesday. Seaside is ranked No. 22 in the Oregon School Activities Association rankings, so a win against a team in the playoff picture could allow Seaside to be considered for the last couple of playoff spots.

Astoria girls soccer shoots for second

It won’t be first place for Astoria High School girls soccer this season. After their 3-1 loss to Scappoose on Thursday, the Fishermen will have to settle for either second or third as the Indians clinched another Cowapa League title with the victory.

Tuesday’s game against St. Helens will be for all the marbles as the teams are second and third in the league standings. Astoria enters Tuesday with a 6-2-1 league record after defeating Rainier/Clatskanie 4-0 on Saturday, and St. Helens enters the game with a 5-2-2 record.

A win or draw would be enough for the Fishermen to finish second place and keep their No. 7 ranking in the state standings.

Seaside girls soccer earns good result

Seaside High School girls soccer stopped their losing skid at three games after a 2-2 draw away against St. Helens on Thursday.

After losing to the Lions 2-0 at Broadway Field, Seaside went home with a positive result in the rematch. The draw moved Seaside’s league record to 1-6-2 with one game left.

Tuesday’s game against Tillamook will be the last home game for Seaside’s group of seniors.

Warrenton volleyball season comes to a close

Warrenton High School volleyball season came to an end Thursday night at Banks. The Warriors and Braves played an exciting back-and-forth five-set match.

With both teams battling for third place in the Coastal Range League, this game had big stakes. The two teams entered the game with identical 5-6 league records and with the victory Banks evened their league record and sent Warrenton to fifth place in the league standings.

After winning a state playoff game last season, the Warriors entered this year with a number of freshmen and sophomores. Despite not making it back to the playoffs, Warrenton saw improvement from their young players, which bodes well for the program over the next few seasons.
