A U.S. Coast Guard aircrew from Astoria rescued a 42-year-old man on a cruise ship experiencing a medical emergency Sunday morning.
The patient, who was a crew member on a cruise ship traveling from British Columbia to Hawaii, was experiencing symptoms of a heart attack.
The cruise ship, which was 160 miles off the Oregon Coast, diverted from its path slightly in order to lessen the distance between a Jayhawk helicopter that responded to the call.
“The Air Station Astoria crew were able to safely hoist that patient, and as soon as they got them on board, they then transferred them and flew straight to Portland to drop them off at OHSU hospital,” Petty Officer 2nd Class Steve Strohmaier said.
