A sushi company based out of Taiwan is bringing its craft to Astoria.

Soon Yi Sushi plans to open a location in September in the former Wauna Credit Union building at Columbia Avenue and W. Marine Drive in Uniontown.

The restaurant will include a drive-thru and a small retail section with canned and frozen seafood, according to Jessie Horgan, the social media and marketing manager for Soon Yi Sushi.

The owner, Chih Yuan Wang, of Da Yang Seafood, said they have built connections with fishermen over the years and want to place roots down in the area in addition to Da Yang’s seafood processing plant on Pier 2 at the Port of Astoria.

“Astoria has a special place in my heart as this is the first place that connected our company to the Pacific Northwest,” Wang said. “S

oon Yi allows us to connect all the relationships we’ve built along the way in the very place we started.”

Kyle Horgan, the domestic sales manager for Da Yang, said keeping seafood frozen through the entire process is the biggest objective. The ability to control that process is something the company prides itself in.

“(Soon Yi) just continues to go along with wanting to expand the business, but also just bring it to Astoria first, to bring really good quality tuna — the super frozen — that we’re able to provide to the local community in Astoria, and have that be our flagship store,” he said.
